The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), through its Forestry Department, provides information and technical advice on forestry and gathers, analyses and disseminates forest-related information of all kinds. FAO chairs the CPF. At the regional level, FAO supports six regional forestry commissions, one each for Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe, the Near East, and North America.
IUFRO has a long and fruitful partnership with FAO. Examples of cooperation include the establishment of the Forestry Research Network for Sub-Saharan Africa (FORNESSA) as well as the collaboration between FAO and the IUFRO Special Programme for Developing Countries (IUFRO-SPDC) in the African, Asian and Latin American regions. IUFRO also co-organizes a range of international meetings with FAO. Moreover, IUFRO is collaborating closely with FAO, CIFOR and other partners in the context of the joint CPF initiative GFIS.

The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) is an international research and global knowledge institution committed to conserving forests and improving the livelihoods of people in the tropics.
IUFRO and CIFOR collaborate in the organization of international scientific conferences and meetings and carry out joint activities. For example, IUFRO and CIFOR have provided joint contributions to international processes, such as the Report of the Secretary-General on Forest-Related Scientific Knowledge for the fourth session of UNFF. CIFOR, FAO and IUFRO are also key partners in the CPF Initiative GFIS. Moreover, CIFOR is a partner in the IUFRO Special Project “World Forests, Society and Environment
