The webinar will feature presentations from four speakers, providing a broad territorial and sectoral perspective on the topic and aiming to gain insights into how we can synergistically address wildfire risk reduction and nature conservation challenges. Sebastian Kirppu from Protect the Forest in Sweden will commence with a case example from Northern Europe, illustrating how wildfire risk management and nature conservation can be interconnected. Following him, Antonio López from the Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge will delve into the topic of wildfires in Natura 2000 sites. Next, Roman Berčák from the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague will discuss the challenges of multi-risk forest management in the context of nature conservation and wildfires, using the case of the Saxonian and Czech fires of 2022. Concluding the presentations, Adrián Tišťan will offer a vision from DG Environment in the European Commission. The webinar will be closed with a panel discussion among the speakers and the opportunity for questions by the public. The webinar will be moderated jointly by Alexander Held from the European Forest Institute and Julia Haas from Forest Europe.

Tribes and First Nations have been forest stewards since time immemorial on the land that is currently called North America. In the face of climate change, tribes and First Nations continue to work with institutions, NGOs, and federal and state agencies to support Indigenous sovereignty and resilient forested landscapes. This webinar will focus on the current state of tribal forest management and Indigenous stewardship with a series of speakers from different tribes, universities, non-profits, and agencies. Beginning with an introduction to tribal forestry and the trust responsibilities, topics will include the history of forest stewardship on tribal lands in North America, federal laws and tribal forestry, contemporary uses of plants and wildlife stewardship, fire, conclusions from the Indian Forest Management Assessment (IFMAT), tribal co-management, and the future of tribal forestry in the face of climate change. The Yale Forest Forum series is co-developed and co-hosted by The Forest School and the Yale Center for Environmental Justice at Yale School of the Environment, and Salish Kootenai College.

This course, developed by gender experts, compiles research, case studies and practical recommendations from leading institutions engaged in forest landscape restoration. In this self-paced online course, you will learn the fundamentals of gender and social inclusion in forest landscapes restoration (FLR). The course focuses on gender inequalities, gender-differentiated impacts and opportunities to address inequalities for more equitable and sustainable FLR, to build the abilities and understanding of diverse stakeholders on the gender and FLR nexus.

Freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems are closely interconnected, but they are often studied in isolation from each other. In the context of global change, it is urgent to understand how blue (water) and green (land) ecosystems are similar or different in terms of biodiversity patterns, ecological and evolutionary processes, and their responses to global drivers. Evidence-based understanding of blue-green biodiversity is necessary to inform policies and action to halt and reverse nature loss that threatens human well-being. The goal of the "Summer School: Blue-green biodiversity. Research and practice and the interface of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems" is to provide an in-depth understanding of the linkages between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and the interdependencies between social and ecological systems. While focusing on Swiss habitats, a highlight will be placed on an integrated approach that considers the ecological, evolutionary, and social dimensions of blue and green ecosystems benefits the conservation, maintenance, and restoration of biodiversity.

Is early browning in European forests a harbinger of tree death or simply a sign of temporary stress? In 2018, science could not answer this question. But one thing was clear: the frequency of extreme events, including droughts, had increased after the hot summer of 2003. Even though droughts also occurred during the last century, they were not accompanied by such high temperatures as today. And on top of climate warming, various manifestations of global change trigger a multitude of cascading processes in and around forests. It’s complicated...

The Summer School "Forests and Extremes" wants to face up to the complexity of compound and cascading events. Alongside national and international experts from multiple disciplines, participants will expose themselves to the unknown: the future of terrestrial ecosystems with a focus on forests! Through field excursions, input lectures, group assignments, and ample opportunities to interact with peers and practitioners, participants will acquire practical and theoretical knowledge on future extremes. This includes understanding their expected impacts on functioning and services of forests and other ecosystems, the consequences for society and economy, and possible response options.
