Forest Insects and Diseases Cone and Seed Insects Publications Awards IUFRO Meetings Other Meetings Austria Strengthens its Host Country Role as IUFRO Headquarters Move into Ministry's Building The International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) successfully celebrated the first International Day of Forests on 21 March 2013 with an official opening of its new offices located in the building of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Life in Marxergasse 2, 1030 Vienna. "Austria has a worldwide reputation for its successful sustainable forest management and it places particular emphasis on international networking. Therefore, Austria has supported the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) for forty years now. Austria has also been the host country for IUFRO Headquarters since 1973", remarked Federal Minister Nikolaus Berlakovich on the occasion of the opening of the new IUFRO Headquarters on the premises of the Ministry of Life. For the past forty years, IUFRO Headquarters were located at the Austrian Federal Research and Training Centre for Forests, Natural Hazards and Landscape (BFW) in Vienna. Dr. Markus Neumann, Deputy Director of BFW, illustrated the longstanding cooperation between IUFRO and his organization. After all, it was former BFW scientist Karl Bhmerle who first expressed the idea of establishing an organization such as IUFRO back in 1890. The BFW became the first member of IUFRO and its director Josef Friedrich was the first IUFRO President. Current IUFRO President Professor Niels Elers Koch thanked Austria for the strong and mutually beneficial support over the years and underlined the important role of Austria's DI Gerhard Mannsberger as the Host Country Representative on the IUFRO Board since 2003. He emphasized that the Austrian support was vital for IUFRO to adequately address the manifold and ever more complex global issues that face forest science. "By disseminating reliable and relevant scientific knowledge from our global network of about 15.000 forest scientists to decision makers, IUFRO contributes to forest policy and management in a significant way. In the future, it will be important to position forest research properly in a larger landscape scenario. IUFRO will definitely play a decisive role here", explained the IUFRO President. (IUFRO HQ press release of 22 March 2013) United Nations, Observing First International Day of Forests, Celebrates Their Vital, Life-sustaining Role For centuries forests have been a source of food, fiber, livelihoods, resources and water. They are also central to combating climate change, but until today, and despite a multitude of special days honoring or commemorating key elements of human life, there has never been a globally recognized day for paying homage to the world's forests. That has changed now that the United Nations General Assembly has designated 21 March as the International Day of Forests "to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests and of trees outside forests". In a message for the new International Day, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said: "By proclaiming the International Day of Forests, the United Nations has created a new platform to raise awareness about the importance of all types of forest ecosystems to sustainable development." ... World Wood Day is celebrated on the same day as the International Day of Forests to raise the awareness on how wood plays a key role for a sustainable future. The idea for world wood day was first advocated in 2009 by the International Wood Culture Society along with partners and friends. The idea behind World Wood Day is a cultural approach to realize the concept of wood is good. To celebrate the initiation, World Wood Day works in concert with the International Day of Forests to bring wood, together with forests, into people's lives. The 2013 World Wood Day Symposium was held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, from 19-20 March. The symposium aimed to encourage the exchange of ideas and experiences concerning the wood research, strategy and practice, in the cultural, historical and social contexts and development. http://www.worldwoodday.org/activity/2013/about.cfm HYPERLINK "http://www.iufro.org/science/divisions/division-5/50000/51000/51001/activities/" http://www.iufro.org/science/divisions/division-5/50000/51000/51001/activities/ Technical Session Proposals for the IUFRO World Congress 2014 will be accepted until 30 April 2013! Session proposals will be reviewed and evaluated by members of the Congress Scientific Committee with primary consideration given to their scientific quality and relevance to the Congress themes. Other factors that will be considered are: the involvement of two or more IUFRO units (Divisions, Task Forces, Research Groups and Working Parties) and/or non-IUFRO organizations; geographic and gender diversity of proposed session speakers/presenters; and the involvement of students and young scientists. Proposals will be evaluated as they are received, so submissions well in advance of the April 30th deadline are strongly encouraged. Acceptance decisions will be made no later than June 30th, 2013. An open Call for Abstracts will be issued in July, with online abstract submission until October 15th and acceptance decisions until November 30th (2013). http://iufro2014.com/scientific-program/session-proposals/ Forest Insects and Diseases The joint meeting of the IUFRO Working Parties WP 7.03.10 "Methodology of Forest Insect and Disease Survey in Central Europe" and WP 7.03.06 "Integrated Management of Forest Defoliating Insects" was held in Palanga/Lithuania, September 1014, 2012. This was the tenth meeting of IUFRO WP 7.03.10, which was founded in 1998 and the seventh meeting of IUFRO WP 7.03.06, which was founded in 1992. At the meeting, the 2012 George Varley award was presented to Dr. Alexander Isaev, Russian senior scientist in forest protection honoring his lifetime scientific accomplishments. The participants were invited to publish their presentations as regular scientific papers in the journal Baltic Forestry, the Journal of forest science in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia (http://balticforestry.mi.lt). The next meeting of WP 7.03.10 is being planned tentatively in Italy, during September 2014, in San Michele all'Adige, near Trento (Verona). The dominant message that emerged from this meeting is that there is an increasing appreciation of the diversity of pathogens and pests of seed and seedlings and their capacity to evade common phytosanitary detection. With this comes the realization that the risk of introduction of invasive pests and pathogens through the increasing worldwide trade of this type of plant material is very likely to be underestimated. In addition, while assisted migration the intentional movement of organisms outside natural range limits is often presented as a climate change adaptation approach, it will also increase the risk of introduction of pests and pathogens. In this context, it appears very clearly that the resources devoted to research on pests and pathogens of seeds and seedlings at the national and inter-national levels are not commensurate to the risk these organisms pose to forestry.
