SCION

Scion is a New Zealand government-owned organisation with a proud heritage in forestry science.

Founded in 1947 as the New Zealand Forest Research Institute, we have provided more than 60 years of support and science innovation for the forestry and forest product sectors.

Our purpose is to create economic value and contribute to beneficial environmental and social outcomes for New Zealand.

Scope of our science

Scion is New Zealand’s leading Crown Research Institute in:

  • sustainable forest management and tree improvement
  • forestry biosecurity and risk management and mitigation
  • wood processing, wood-related bioenergy, waste streams and other biomaterials
  • forestry and forestry-based ecosystem services to inform land-use decision making.

We also undertake research relating to:

  • soil and freshwater management
  • climate change adaptation and mitigation
  • indigenous forestry
  • industrial biotechnology and high-value manufacturing.

Scion employs approximately 340 people and has its head office in Rotorua, New Zealand.

National resources

Scion maintains a number of facilities, databases and collections with national importance to New Zealand’s forest industry.

  • National Forestry Herbarium and Database
  • National Forest Health Reference Collection
  • National Forestry Library
  • National Wood Performance Archive
  • Permanent Sample Plot Database
  • Containment facility for insects and pathogens

Why membership in IUFRO is important to Scion

Good science requires connectivity. IUFRO provides access to a valuable network that brings scientists together on a global level.

Through the IUFRO network we strengthen our collective ability to address issues ranging from specific scientific questions to high-level strategic issues. IUFRO offers an important forum for scientists to gain consensus and influence policy decisions.

As a relatively small and geographically isolated country, we welcome the opportunity to be part of this community.
