IUFRO-WFSE News on Partnership and Collaboration

IUFRO WFSE Editorial Workshop in CATIE, Costa Rica 8-10 November 2011. The editors and key authors of the next WFSE publication discussed and further developed the Steering Committee's proposal for the new book "Forests under pressure: Local responses to global issues". The participants agreed on the overall structure of the book, and the framework and approaches to be used.

IUFRO WFSE Steering Committee (SC) convened at IUFRO Headquarters in Vienna 18-20 May 2011 to discuss the project activities during and outputs from the previous period and to plan the activities for the period 2011-2014.  The SC agreed on the theme and approach of the new book to be launched at the IUFRO World Congress in 2014.

The IUFRO-WFSE policy brief "Making forests work for people and nature – Responding to global drivers of change" was  launched on 31 January, 2011 in the IUFRO side event at the UNFF9.

The IUFRO-WFSE – FAO – RECOFTC policy brief "Asian Forests: Working for People and Nature" was launched on October 8, 2010 in the COFO session jointly with GFEP Expert Panel on International Forest Regime on "Embrazing Complexity: Meeting Forest Governance Challenges".

The book "Forest and Society – Responding to Global Drivers of Change" was launched at a Technical Session in the XXIII IUFRO World Congress in Seoul, Korea, August 2010. This session presented and discussed the challenges and opportunities related to the global drivers of change and the ways to reduce their adverse effects as well as to take advantage of the benefits and opportunities they might bring.

The IUFRO-WFSE Policy Brief on Sub-Saharan Africa, "Making Sub-Saharan African Forests Work for People and Nature – Policy approaches in a changing global environment" was launched at the 2nd World Agroforestry Congress in Nairobi in August 2009.


Workshop of the convening lead authors and editors of the forthcoming book "Future of Forests – Responding to Global Changes" in Hamburg, Germany, 15-18 June 2009. The editors and over twenty lead authors discussed and commented the first drafts of each chapter for the forthcoming book in order to produce a timely, high quality scientific publication.


IUFRO side event at UNFF-8 in New York, 22 April 2009. Heidi Vanhanen (Metla), René Alfaro (NRCan) and Robert Nasi (CIFOR) presented the Policy Briefs on Latin America, Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa.


The Task Force workshop to initiate the Policy Brief: Making Sub-Saharan Forests Work for People and Nature was held in Nairobi, Kenya, 15-17 April 2008. The Policy Brief will be a joint initiative of IUFRO-WFSE, ICRAF, CIFOR and AFF.


Steering Committee meeting of IUFRO-WFSE on 23–24 October 2007 in Bogor, Indonesia, deliberated the tentative contents of the book to be launched at the IUFRO World Congress 2010. Also the schedule for the IUFRO-WFSE Policy Briefs as well as other organizational issues were discussed.

The coordinator Gerardo Mery, NRCan representative René Alfaro and Jari Varjo from Metla visited FAO to present the past and future IUFRO-WFSE project activities and to discuss future collaboration on 24–26 September 2007.

Heidi Vanhanen presented the process for producing and the draft contents of the Policy Brief: Making European Forests Work for People and Nature for discussion at the IUFRO European Congress 2007: Forests and Forestry in the Context of Rural Development on 6-8 September in Warsaw, Poland.

The coordinator Gerardo Mery and Heidi Vanhanen participated in the EFI Annual Conference 5 September 2007 in Warsaw, Poland.

A scientific abstract and an oral presentation of IUFRO-WFSE activities under the title of "Making forests in the developing world work for people and nature" were introduced by Heidi Vanhanen at the IUFRO Division VI Symposium: Integrative Science for Integrative Management at Saariselkä, Finland, 14–20 August 2007.

A joint workshop was organized by GFIS and IUFRO-WFSE at CATIE, Costa Rica, 25-30 March 2007. Also the arrangements of successive GFIS and IUFRO-WFSE workshops were discussed.

Peter A. Minang of ICRAF acted as the facilitator all through the Task Force workshop to initiate the Policy Brief: Making Sub-Saharan Forests Work for People and Nature.


2007


A task force of eight persons from WFSE and the European partner organizations European Forest Institute EFI, Finnish Forest Research Institute Metla and Institute for World Forestry BFH-HU met in June 2007 in Vienna to discuss a draft presented by the four editors.
