IUFRO The Advocate for Forest Science.
Working Party 2.04.08, Cytogenetics, is particularly concerned with relationships between genetic characteristics of forest trees, as developed through evolution, and cytological features, especially chromosomal features, in trees and shrubs. Planned is a Database of the chromosomes and its banding patterns of Gymnosperm Plants.
Gene mapping:
Cytogenetics will to be integrated into molecular mapping programmes to assign genes, linkage groups etc. to specific chromosomes and physical locations on chromosomes.
Detection of pollution:
Cytogenetic studies of arborescent plants subjected to pollution has proven to be an excellent method to evaluate pollution effects.
Applied tree improvement:
Cytogenetic demonstrates the potentials for increasing yields by an initial manipulation of ploidy levels. An increased emphasis of cytogenetics in tree improvement programs is possible as new approaches are devised to generate more fiber per hectare.
