IUFRO The Advocate for Forest Science.
Education in forest products is critical to innovation, technological progress in the entire industry sector, and the reception of wood in society per se. Over the past few decades education in forest products has been subject of major changes. This unit should provide a forum of discussion to evaluate current trends and meet future challenges in primary and secondary forest product education.
Over the past few decades there has been a steady decline in the percentage of programs actively engaged in delivering wood science and technology education. If such trends continue this will have negative impacts on the wood product industry. On the other hand momentum has been created with new initiatives in biomaterials, with “nano related topics, renewable materials or sustainability, which have entered education curricula. In addition, programs for continuous education, life-long learning, didactics, and e-learning have also become buzzwords that need to be addressed. The scope of this unit is therefore to provide a critical analysis of current problems, i.e. research funding, focus of university programs, expectation by industry, public awareness, compatibility of programs across countries. The outcome should provide a better understanding of current developments in forest products education and advocate also new trends and policy making processes.
