7.03.05 – Integrated control of scolytid bark beetles

Print
Coordinator:
Barbara J. Bentz, United States
Deputies:
Rudolf Wegensteiner, Austria

State of Knowledge

The 7.03.05 Working Party focuses on bark beetles within the subfamily Scolytinae (formally Scolytidae).  Scolytine bark beetles are important agents of disturbance in forests worldwide.  The goal of this Working Party is to increase and advance knowledge that will facilitate integrated control of bark beetles.  Emphasis is placed on understanding factors that affect bark beetle population dynamics and ecosystem impacts of population outbreaks in space and time.  Included are studies focused on the role of natural enemies, host-tree volatiles, pheromones and climate change in long-term population dynamics; monitoring and forecasting bark beetle populations; and technical and chemical strategies for mitigating bark beetle outbreaks that consider impacts on non-target species and the environment.  We stimulate communication and co-operation among scientists, forest managers, and students world-wide.  The Working Party provides opportunities to integrate across scientific disciplines, and connections with other IUFRO Working Parties are a priority.  Meetings are held every 1-2 years.  People interested in the Working Party should contact the Coordinator.
