Scientific Summary No. 63, 2009

Latest research on new data collection technologies and the potential of using data collected for one purpose for multiple other purposes was reviewed at a Conference in Mount Gambier, South Australia.

The IUFRO Conference from 17-20 August 2009 in Mount Gambier, South Australia on 'Meeting Multiple Demands for Forest Information: New Technologies in Forest Data Gathering' looked at the emergence of new data collection technologies and the potential of using data collected for one purpose for multiple other purposes as well. Participants identified, among other things, a need for continuous efforts to strengthen coherence in forest science; a need to change forest industry attitudes to ensure faster uptake of new technologies; a need for greater strategic investment in research, development transfer and training; and a need for applications to be problem driven and fit for purpose.
