Issue 1 in 2008 examines the role of traditional forest knowledge especially in Asia, looks back at a year of successful IUFRO-SPDC training courses on science-policy interfacing, and highlights the successful role of IUFRO at the UNCCC in Bali and IUFRO’s participation in the “Forest Day”, in particular. The issue also contains an obituary for Jean Pardé, Honorary Member of IUFRO. Besides information on publications, reports from past meetings and announcements of up-coming meetings, readers learn about the new possibility to join IUFRO mailing lists.

Forests, bioenergy and climate change as well as the capacity of healthy and productive forests to mitigate climate change are the main topics of this issue.
This issue includes a report from the conference on “Old Forests, New Management” in Tasmania as well as an invitation to detail a PR and Communication Expert to IUFRO Headquarters for one year.
Two new IUFRO Occasional Papers are presented: No. 21 "Adaptations of Forests to Climate Change: A Multidisciplinary Review", and No. 20 "Communicating Forest Science: A Daily Task".
