The United Nations General Assembly declared 2011 the International Year of Forests to promote awareness of sustainable forest management of all types of forests. "This publication", says Jan MacAlpine, Director of the United Nations Forum on Forests Secretariat, "will undoubtedly contribute to raising awareness and strengthening sustainable forest management for the current and future generations." IUFRO has been one of the contributors to this book with an article on "Forest governance at global, regional and local levels" by Jeremy Rayner and Alexander Buck. (IUFRO article on page 86)
