IUFRO News Vol. 40, Issue 9, September 2011

IUFRO Vice-President Mike Wingfield describes the challenges of forest research from the point of view of a director of a research institute and underlines at the same time the advantages and strengths that IUFRO offers to scientists through well-structured international collaboration. Examples of this successful cooperation can be seen from the series of IUFRO meeting reports on such diverse themes as historical ecology, genetic resistance, adaptation to climate change, legal aspects of European forest sustainable development, etc. The newsletter also informs that Perry Brown, who has been active in IUFRO for almost 40 years, recently received the IUFRO Distinguished Service Award. A number of important announcements of publications, scholarships, positions, and upcoming meetings rounds off this September issue.
