5.02.00 - Physiomechanical properties of wood and wood-based materials
Building construction and repair account for a substantial amount of all lumber and other engineered wood products consumed annually worldwide. There are also substantial amounts of timber being used for bridges and other engineered applications. Forecasts indicate that there will be increased worldwide demand for both conventional structural materials and innovative structural products. These indications, along with a growing need to conserve timber resources and to minimize both initial construction and life-cycle costs including energy costs associated with heating and cooling, necessitates the development of improved and/or new design and construction methods that reduce inefficient uses of material and utilize products compatible with a forest resource that is changing. Increasingly, small diameter trees, plantation wood and wood from underutilized species are becoming large components of the forest resource base.
The scope of subject matter included in this area includes, for example
- Developing engineering design criteria for the performance of new types of engineered assemblies,
- Developing design criteria for improved structural performance for use in reliability-based design codes,
- Developing design criteria for wood composites in structural systems,
- Developing methods for characterizing the statistical distribution of the engineering properties of engineered wood products,
- Recommending design cirteria for creep and creep-rupture behavior of structural use panels for use in various environmental conditions.
These are but a few examples of the research topics included within the scope of this Research Group. In summary, this Research Group deals with all aspects of the design and use of wood and timber resources for structural applications.
One major objective is to present topics of general interest to the international forestry community on wood and timber engineering issues, by providing a forum for discussing the critical issues facing the engineered use of wood in the world today.
A second objective is to provide presentations and a forum to discuss the research conducted by international scientists in this area. Typically, these conferences, workshops or technical forums include research topics with a focus on technologies that improve or facilitate the value-added utilization and environmentally acceptable recycling of wood products. Sessions at conferences in which Research Group 5.02 participates are organized around invited papers that give general state-of-the-art reviews, and on volunteered papers from scientists working on various research topics in these areas. In planning international meetings, workshops, and technical forums, concerted efforts are made to complement, and not compete with or duplicate other entities that organize similar events on an international basis.
The Research Group Coordinator and Deputies are responsible for facilitating communications with and between all members of this group, and for preparing annual progress reports for IUFRO and synthesis reports for IUFRO World Congresses.
