This Working Party provides information and coordinate research in the surface improvements and performance enhancements to wood products, through mechanical or chemical means, and to examine the interaction of wood and wood based products with stains, paints and abrasive materials. For the purposes of this Working Party, surface technology and techniques for solid wood and wood based products are the focus. The wood based products include composites materials. Sustainability of raw materials for producing all manufactured items and feedstocks is an important issue in the world today. Renewable materials, such as timber and agricultural crops are sustainable and environmentally acceptable for the production of many different types of manufactured items. The sustainability issue has resulted in the universal acceptance of water based acrylic topcoats for exterior timber. On-going development by coating formulators to design still better paints continues unabated, with nanotechnology and new synthetic resins and additives appearing. Read more
