UPDATED GLOBAL FOREST DECIMAL CLASSIFICATION (GFDC)

PUBLISHED BY IUFRO – COLLABORATORS NEEDED TO TRANSLATE TO FRENCH AND SPANISH.

IUFRO announces the publication of an extensively updated bilingual full version of English/German edition of the Global Forest Decimal Classification (GFDC).

The new edition is published in the IUFRO World Series as Volume 19. GFDC will replace the former Forest Decimal Classification (FDC) and Oxford System for Decimal Classification for Forestry (ODC), with publication sponsored by the Austrian Federal Research and Training Centre for Forests, Natural Hazards and Landscape (BFW).

This edition includes about 80 new numbers and 100 extensions (or clarifications) of existing numbers, as well as all amendments 1-9 published between 1954 and 1992. The original concepts have been retained and new concepts added, bringing the classification up-to-date to reflect current issues in forestry and forest products research.

If you currently use the Oxford version Oxford System for Decimal Classification for Forestry (ODC) (published in 1953) or Forstliche Dezimal-Klassifikation Forest Decimal Classification (FDC) (published in 1992) you may order your updated latest bilingual paper edition in English and German (one volume) from BFW (see detailed contact information below).

The price is 35 Euros plus shipping. Users of the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) should also order a copy because GFDC is the official UDC expansion for UDC forestry numbers.

If you are seeking a tool to organize literature (paper copies) or electronic forestry information resources you should consider purchasing a copy of this classification scheme. It will provide convenient, multilingual subject access to your materials.

The next challenge for the GFDC steering group is to publish French and Spanish editions. We are actively seeking collaborators for this endeavour, because we do not have French or Spanish language skills.
