The first assessment report prepared in the framework of GFEP addressed "Adaptation of Forests and People to Climate Change". It was published in 2009 and formally presented at the 8th session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF) taking place 20 April-1 May 2009 at the UN Headquarters in New York City.

The IUFRO report "Adaptation of Forests and People to Climate Change – A Global Assessment Report" received significant media coverage around the world.
