Global Forest Expert Panels (GFEP)
The "Global Forest Expert Panels" initiative of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests was launched in April 2007 to provide objective and independent scientific assessments of key issues in order to support more informed decision-making at the global level. The initiative is led and coordinated by the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO). The assessments are carried out by thematic Global Forest Expert Panels uniting leading scientists from around the world.
Following the successful completion of the thematic reports on forest adaptation, and the international forest regime, GFEP established an Expert Panel on Biodiversity, Forest Management, and REDD+ in December 2011. The new Panel will comprehensively assess the linkages between biodiversity, carbon and forest management in the context of REDD+ and provide the results to CBD COP11, UNFCCC COP18 and UNFF10.

New GFEP assessment report published as IUFRO World Series 28
A new study assessing international efforts to improve forest governance was issued together with a policy brief on 24 January 2011 by the Global Forest Expert Panel on International Forest Regime. It suggests among other things that global efforts have too often ignored local needs and failed to address the fact that deforestation is usually caused by economic pressures from outside the forests. The detailed results of the work of the expert panel, which was constituted under the Collaborative Partnership on Forests and coordinated by IUFRO, will be presented to the Ninth Session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF) on 31 January 2011 as part of the launch of the International Year of Forests.

Hosted by FAO, the newly established Panel on Biodiversity, Forest Management, and REDD+ will convene its 1st meeting on 2 and 3 February in Rome. The Panel will work on refining the assessment's outline and on distributing the task between authors.
