Special Programme for Developing Countries

The mission of the Special Programme for Developing Countries (in short IUFRO-SPDC) is "to expand and foster forest research capacity in developing and economically disadvantaged countries".

According to the programme's strategy for 2007 to 2010 the IUFRO-SPDC activities cover the following five priority areas:

  • Enhancing core scientific competence;
  • Improving information management and dissemination;
  • Enhancing science contribution to policy processes;
  • Promoting communication and multi-stakeholder learning processes,
  • Providing institutional support to regional forest research networks.

Pre-Congress Training Workshops (23-24 June, 2012)

Scientist Assistance Programme
The Scientist Assistance Program (SAP) is designed to offer delegates from Sub-Saharan African countries financial assistance (congress registration fee, flight ticket, accommodation and subsistence) to participate in the first IUFRO-FORNESSA Regional Congress. Support packages will be offered in relation with the Pre-Congress Training Workshops organised by the IUFRO Special Programme for Developing Countries (IUFRO-SPDC) and Global Forest Information Service (GFIS). Deadline for submission is March 30, 2012
Candidates will be selected among early and mid-career scientists younger than 45 years. Criteria such as contribution to the Regional Congress, gender and country balance apply. Successful candidates will be notified about their sponsorship approval by April 30, 2012. If you have questions regarding the SAP application, please write to: spdc(at)iufro.org

Pre-Congress Training Workshops
As part of IUFRO’s capacity building programme for young and mid-career scientists, IUFRO-SPDC will organise the following two training workshops prior to the Congress from 23 to 24 June, 2012:

  • PREPARING AND WRITING RESEARCH PROPOSALS
    Who should attend? Young scientists from African countries in need to expand their skills in mobilising funding for their research.
    Interested in participating? Please fill in the expression of interest form!

  • COMMUNICATING FOREST RESEARCH – MAKING SCIENCE WORK FOR POLICY AND MANAGEMENT
    Who should attend? Early and mid-career scientists/research managers from African countries interested in learning more about effective science communication.

Training Workshop
COMMUNICATING FOREST RESEARCH – MAKING SCIENCE WORK FOR POLICY AND MANAGEMENT
Prior to the 2nd Asia Pacific Forestry Week
Chinese Academy of Forestry, Beijing, 4 and 5 November, 2011

IUFRO-SPDC in close cooperation with the IUFRO Working Party 9.01.02 Communication and Public Relations organised a training workshop on "Communicating forest research – making science work for policy and management" on 4 and 5 November, 2011 in Beijing, China.

Taller de capacitación pre-congreso "Trabajando efectivamente en la Interfaz entre la Ciencia y la Política Forestal” y Congreso Latinoaméricano de Derecho Forestal y Ambiental

El Programa Especial para Países en Desarrollo de IUFRO (IUFRO-SPDC) invitó a participar a científicos y asesores políticos al taller pre-congreso "Trabajando efectivamente en la Interfaz entre la Ciencia y la Política Forestal”  y en el Congreso Latinoaméricano de Derecho Forestal y Ambiental. IUFRO-SPDC organizó el taller con el apoyo del Grupo de Trabajo de Derecho Forestal y Ambiental Latinoamericano (6.13.01) y con instructores de formación científica y política, provenientes de Chile y Costa Rica. 

IUFRO-SPDC, con el apoyo financiero del Gobierno de Finlandia, tuvo a disposición un número limitado de becas para investigadores provenientes de América Latina y el Caribe.

Post-Symposium Training Workshop
WORKING EFFECTIVELY AT THE INTERFACE OF FOREST SCIENCE AND FOREST POLICY
Punjab Agriculture University, Ludhiana, 13 and 14 February, 2011

IUFRO-SPDC in cooperation with the Punjab Agriculture University organised a training workshop on science-policy interfacing.
This workshop was open for participants of the IUFRO Symposium on “Short Rotation Forestry: Synergies for Wood Production and Environmental Amelioration” and was held at the same venue from 10 to 12 February 2011.
