f) Executive Summary of the pre-IUFRO-WFSE publications of 1999-2001, 2003
The generous financial support from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland is highly appreciated. Further funding for the project activities, both in cash and kind, was provided by the partners.
After the identification of the critical global issues specified in 2003 as forest governance, environmental services, plantation forests and the contribution of forestry to livelihoods, recognized scientists and research groups were jointly identified to carry out the respective critical reviews.
The subject issues and the changing paradigms were thoroughly discussed and debated in workshops. The first workshop for the editors and the convening lead authors of the book convened in Helsinki, February 2–4, 2004 (see Photo Album). The second workshop for the editors and convening lead authors met in Tokyo, Japan on May 26–27, 2004. The workshop continued the joint critical discussion and analysis of the key issues in the interface between forests, society and the environment, examined the progress of each working group and scrutinised the relevant technical issues in the publication. The meeting was generously sponsored by UNU.
At the end more than 150 scientists from all continents provided their input to this joint effort. The book was released at the XXII IUFRO World Congress in Brisbane, Australia, in August, 2005. The book contributes to international scientific discussion and reflects on how changing paradigms are resonating in global arenas. Also several cross-cutting issues are scrutinized as to their role in enhancing sustainable forest management. The state and repercussions of the on-going processes on different continents are also addressed in the section providing regional analyses.

The Policy Brief was built on the process of preparing the book Forests in the Global Balance – Changing Paradigms.
A workshop on composing the Policy Brief of Forests in the Global Balance was organized jointly by IUFRO-WFSE and Natural Resources Canada, Canadian Forest Service in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, on January 12-16, 2005. The workshop — with more than 30 authors, researchers and policy experts — was an innovative forum to integrate the conclusions of experts in different fields into a well-developed and balanced view on the forests, society and environment interface.
The Policy Brief was published in May 2005 by Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland and IUFRO. The Policy Brief is aimed at providing a solid scientific basis for policy development and formulation and to facilitate decision-making and implementation through a deep understanding of current and future processes in the interrelations between forests, society and the environment.
The Policy Brief is available in English, Spanish and French (as pdf files):
Forests for the New Millennium – Making Forests work for People and Nature
Bosques para el Nuevo Mileno – Bosques que beneficien a la gente y sustenten la
naturalza
Des Fôrets pour le Nouveau Millénaire – des fôrets à gérer dans l'intérêt des gens et la nature.
To support the international processes in attaining their objectives the Policy Brief was launched and distributed to the participants of the United Nations Forum on Forests on May 25, 2005 in New York.
World Forests, Society and Environment, as a Metla, EFI, UNU/IAS partnership project 1996 – 2001 was an ambitious initiative that brought together the research of 149 scientists from four continents. This Executive Summary presents a brief overview of the issues in the three publications of the previous phase of WFSE up to 2001. The Executive Summary was launched at a side event in the XII World Forestry Congress, Quebec, Canada, in September 2003.
