There is growing recognition by the international forest science and forest policy communities of the importance and relevance of local and indigenous knowledge about forests, and the need to consider this knowledge in the development of policies and practices that support sustainable management of forest resources. However, there have been only limited efforts to date to bridge the gaps that currently exist between the forest science community and the holders and users of traditional forest knowledge. The Task Force, established in 2005, will help IUFRO play a key role in fostering a broader understanding of traditional forest knowledge within the forest science community and both the opportunities and limitations that exist for enhanced collaboration between these two broad communities and with decision-makers.
The primary objective of the Task Force on Traditional Forest Knowledge is to increase understanding of the inter-relationships between traditional and formal (scientific) forest-related knowledge and catalyze potential synergistic applications to sustainable forest management. Towards this goal, the Task Force, during the period 2006-2010, will: (1) prepare a state-of-knowledge report that will cover a range of issues relevant to the objectives of the Task Force; (2) organize a series of regional conferences in collaboration with partner organizations that will serve as platforms for discussion and sharing of experiences between forest scientists and holders and users of traditional forest knowledge, and (3) identify opportunities for IUFRO to contribute in substantial ways to forest policy forums and processes on issues related to traditional forest-related knowledge and its application to sustainable forest management.
Further details on the background of the Task Force and detailed terms of reference of its future activities may be found in “About the Task Force
