Save the Date – Public Lecture at BOKU University by Michael Kleine


Dear colleague, 

We are pleased to invite you to a special public lecture to be delivered by Univ. Doz. Dipl.-Ing. Dr. Michael Kleine on:

"50 Years of Forest-Related Research and Development in International Cooperation

– Personal Experiences and Critical Review" 

When: December 10th, 2024, at 10:00 CET (GMT +1), followed by a buffet lunch 

Where: BOKU University (Peter-Jordan-Straße 82, 1190 Vienna), Building Ilse-Wallentin-Haus (ILWA), Ground floor, Seminar room SR-29 and online via Zoom.

In this lecture, Michael Kleine, an Austrian forest expert of international renown, will share unique insights from his extensive experience in international cooperation on forest research and development including a critical reflection on the challenges and advancements over the past five decades. 


About the Speaker:

Michael Kleine is a professional forester and holds Masters, Doctoral (Dr. rer.nat. techn.) and Habilitation (Univ. Doz.) degrees from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU University), Vienna, Austria. Since 1985 he has worked in international development cooperation projects for GIZ/Germany, FAO, European Commission and others, mostly in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and Africa. His work has revolved around sustainable forest management of natural forests and timber plantations, forest certification and related organization, and forest sector policy. He returned to Austria in 1998 and continued his work in economically disadvantaged regions through advisory services and capacity development particularly in science-policy interactions, field training in forest resources assessment, participatory forest landscape restoration and strategic planning for sustainable forestry. In addition, over the past two decades he has been involved as an external lecturer in the Master Course on "Mountain Forestry" at the Institute of Silviculture, BOKU University.


About this Public Lecture:

The lecture will take a critical look at achievements and impacts of forest research and development projects that were implemented in bi- and multilateral cooperation programmes based on personal involvement in such projects. This travel through times from the 1970s until today will present concrete evaluation results and short personal stories illustrating lessons learnt, challenges, and opportunities of working in diverse multi-cultural environments.

This lecture also serves as a moment to recognize Michael's outstanding contributions to IUFRO as he prepares to take on his new role as Senior Advisor after more than 20 years of leading the Special Programme for Development of Capacities (SPDC) and almost 15 years as Deputy Executive Director.
