International Oak Symposium
Knoxville, Tennessee, USA; 7-10 October 2024

The University of Tennessee’s School of Natural Resources is proud to host an International Oak Symposium in 2024 to provide a platform to exchange information and build collaborations around the best available science and technology on oak ecology and management for a global audience. The meeting will provide innovative and progressive formats to deliver and exchange information and foster collaborations between researchers and practitioners. Field trip(s) will be offered that showcase multi-disciplinary research of the USDA Forest Service and other partners.

The overall goal of this symposium is to cultivate and promote synergy among natural resource managers and researchers working towards practical applications to sustain or restore oak ecosystems around the world. The symposium will address the most current issues and complexities related to science-based management of oak species and forests at global, regional, and local scales. The four-day program seeks to engage a diverse audience of managers and scientists in a forum that fosters innovation in silviculture and management for sustainability of oak forests.

Mixed species forests: Risks, Resilience and Management - Book of Abstract

Lund, Sweden. Units involved: 1.01.06, 1.01.10, 1.09.00, 7.03.00, 8.02.01.

Mixed forests are strategic means of adapting forest management to climate change. Higher tree species diversity is expected to provide higher productivity, higher temporal stability, lower risk of biotic and abiotic disturbances and a more diverse portfolio of ecosystem services from forests. Although the knowledge base concerning the ecology of mixed forests has increased during the last decades, almost all forest research has been conducted in monocultures. As a result, there is a lack of knowledge about how to design and manage mixed forests, to sustain production and carbon sequestration, and mitigate abiotic and biotic risks. It is our expectation that this conference will be an arena for discussion and communication between researchers from different disciplines, and also between managers and policy makers. Our main objective is thus to communicate the state-of-the-art scientific knowledge in various fields connected to both mixed forest functioning and management.

Although the conference had to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak, a Book of Abstracts was published.

Sixth International Conference on Plants & Environmental Pollution (ICPEP-6)

Lucknow, India; 27-30 November 2018. 

IUFRO Working Party 1.01.06 will hold a session on Asian oaks. Abstracts are invited that deal with influences of pollution, climate change and anthropogenic disturbances on vitality of oak forests and possible strategies to mitigate those impacts. There is also an interest to know how oak forests in tropical countries can be better managed and conserved to maximize ecosystem services. Oak forests in humid tropical mountains are highly diverse ecosystems and threatened as well. The current knowledge on such forests is limited. IUFRO's Oak Working Party wants to highlight this point in forestry, ecology and plant science conferences in tropical countries.

3rd Restoring Forests: Regeneration and Ecosystem Function for the Future

The conference "3rd Restoring Forests: Regeneration and Ecosystem Function for the Future"  will be held in Lund, Sweden on 12-14 September 2017.
