Webinar series "Pine Silviculture: International success factors" takes off with Scots pine in Central Europe

Pines are one of the main wood-producing species in the world. They have a remarkable economic, social, and environmental role and provide important benefits.

The IUFRO Ecology and silviculture of pine Unit and Centro PINUS – a Portuguese NGO focused on maritime pine – invite foresters and researchers from all over the world to join us. This international webinar series will be a journey to discover the general outlook, analyze challenges, and compare main trends and success factors in pine silviculture.

Save the date! Our virtual journey starts in Central Europe on March 10, and it is specifically dedicated to Scots pine (Pinus silvestris).

The Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE) is the co-promoter of this Webinar, which aims to provide a compact overview of Scots pine management in Central Europe. Emphasis will be placed on timber production and NWFP; The provision of diverse ecosystem services; The vulnerability of Scots pine as to climate change; and Forest conversion for resilience – mixed forest management.

Professor Peter Spathelf has accepted our challenge to introduce the topic of Scots pine management in Central Europe and he will be joined by Susana Carneiro, who will be moderating the conversation. There will be a Q&A at the end.

In an effort to accommodate multiple time zones, the symposium will be held on March 10, 2022, between 3 and 5 p.m. (UCT).

Hot off the press: Special Issue of Forest Ecology and Management

Mixed forests are strategic means of adapting forest management to climate change. Higher tree species diversity is expected to provide higher productivity, higher temporal stability, lower risk of biotic and abiotic disturbances and a more diverse portfolio of ecosystem services from forests. Although the knowledge base concerning the ecology of mixed forests has increased during the last decades, almost all forest research has been conducted in monocultures. As a result, there is a lack of knowledge about how to design and manage mixed forests, to sustain production and carbon sequestration, and mitigate abiotic and biotic risks. This special issue is a platform for bringing together high quality research on mixed forests dynamic and management with special emphasis on resilience to biotic and abiotic disturbances. Its main objective is thus to update the state-of-the-art scientific knowledge in various fields connected to both mixed forest functioning and management under global change.

Call for Submissions - Special Issue "Modelling and Managing the Dynamics of Pine Forests"

Pine forests are widely represented around the world, and play important ecological and economic roles. Climate change might affect pine forest dynamics and the management of these forests. Additionally, changing policies and the diversification of primary uses (sawmill, pellets, panels, pulp and paper, among others) lead to different silvicultural regimes. With this Special Issue, researchers are invited to present the results of their studies on the dynamics of pine forests (regeneration, growth, and mortality), on statistical models which describe those dynamics, or on the silvicultural guidelines for distinct management purposes (timber, biomass, energy, carbon). The submitted papers can focus on factors which influence the natural regeneration process failures such as water stress, soil degradation after fire, and site factors. Papers about the dynamics of seedling growth, tree or stand development, or mortality associated with tree competition or driven by external factors are also welcome. 

With this Special Issue, we hope to discuss the latest research and compile bibliographic reviews about the natural dynamics of pine forests, models describing those dynamics or supportive of silvicultural guidelines, and to identify adaptive management measures to deal with challenging conditions in pine forests of different species around the area of distribution.

This special issue is sponsored by IUFRO Working Party 1.01.10 - Ecology and silviculture of pine.

Although the knowledge base concerning the ecology of mixed forests has increased during the last decades, almost all forest research has been conducted in monocultures. As a result, there is a lack of knowledge about how to design and manage mixed forests, to sustain production and carbon sequestration, and mitigate abiotic and biotic risks. It is our expectation that this conference will be an arena for discussion and communication between researchers from different disciplines, and also between managers and policy makers. Our main objective is thus to communicate the state-of-the-art scientific knowledge in various fields connected to both mixed forest functioning and management.
