Internet Gateway to Forest Information Resources

The Global Forest Information Service collects content from its 300+ partners in the forest sector and makes it more accessible to key stakeholders in a single gateway. Users of the service can easily access forest and tree-related news, events, publications, jobs and more through the website interface, use of a targeted search tool, and custom RSS search alerts.

Through innovative and user friendly means GFIS has developed common information exchange standards, building capacity and enhancing partnerships among forest-related information providers and users.

The goals of the initiative are to enhance access to all types of forest information, ensuring accessibility to all stakeholders, including governments, researchers, forest managers, NGOs, community groups and the public at large, while improving understanding of forest related issues, to better decision making and improve public engagement in forest policy and management.

Partnership Development

Partnerships with institutions related to forests and forestry create a comprehensive and structured storage of information accessible to GFIS users while simultaneously promoting the institutions themselves. With a growing number of information providers the GFIS gateway has grown to be a highly respected online source for information, bringing increased traffic flows to its partners while raising awareness of the work being done in forests on an international level.

GFIS is an initiative of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) – an interagency partnership of 14 major forest-related international organizations, institutions and convention secretariats. In the global policy context, the vision and mission of GFIS are consistent with the resolutions of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF) and the priorities of the CPF. The UNFF6 resolution explicitly mentions the support for the continuation and development of GFIS as a means to promote the exchange of forest management-related experiences and good practices.

GFIS is led by IUFRO, the International Union of Forest Research Organizations; together with FAO, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations; CIFOR, the Center for International Forestry Research, the UNFF Secretariat, and ICRAF, the World Agroforestry Centre.

The Korean Forest Research Institute (KFRI), the US Forest Service and ITTO, International Tropical Timber Organization, have provided financial contribution to GFIS during last years; LUKE, the Natural Resource Institute Finland, also actively contributes to the initiative through in-kind administrative and hosting support.
