IUFRO holds an accredited observer status in the UNCCD since 2015 and is invited to participate in the sessions of its Conferences of the Parties (COP). IUFRO scientists from relevant scientific units, including from selected Task Forces and the Special Programme for Development of Capacities (SPDC) are well placed to contribute to the work of the UNCCD on the topic of dryland forests and associated issues. Scientists from IUFRO and their research outcomes could also provide useful knowledge to and offer potential for participation in the Science Policy Interface (SPI) of the UNCCD. IUFRO and UNCCD work together also through the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF).

At the UNCCD COP-12 in Ankara, Turkey (2015), IUFRO co-organized two side events. At the side event on "Contribution of forests and trees to food security in Drylands", organized jointly with FAO and the Global Mechanism, the key results of the GFEP assessment report on Forests and Food Security with particular emphasis on drylands were presented.
