IUFRO applied for accreditation as an observer organization to the UNEP's governing body – the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) – receiving successful accreditation in March 2016. IUFRO representatives attended the second session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-2) in May 2016, including the Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum (GMGSF) and the Science-Policy Forum, held in conjunction with the UNEA-2. IUFRO and UNEP also work closely together through the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) and the Global Partnership on Forest and Landscape Restoration (GPFLR). For example, UNEP experts have been invited to contribute to the Scoping Meetings of the scientific global assessments of the Global Forest Expert Panels, GFEP.

IUFRO and UNEP collaborated more closely in the frame of the Global Forest Expert Panels (GFEP) Rapid Response Assessment on Illegal Logging and Related Timber Trade in year 2016. UNEP hosted and financially supported the Scoping Meeting for the assessment in Nairobi, Kenya in May 2016, back-to-back with the UNEA-2. The meeting gathered 25 experts, scientists, representatives of indigenous peoples and expert institutions. UNEP also provided financial contributions for travel arrangements and subsistence of scientists to the Scientific Expert Meeting on the topic (September 2016, in Vienna). The launch of the scientific assessment report during the CBD COP-13 in Cancun, Mexico in 2016 included the Executive Director of UNEP.
