UNFF16 Side Event: Forests, Trees and Eradication of Poverty: A GFEP Global Assessment Report

"We know that in times of crises forests and other natural resources really are the safety net for the poor", remarked Mette Løyche Wilkie, Chair, Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF), at the closing session of this IUFRO-GFEP webinar. Watch the recorded webinar and find out more about the interlinkages between forests and poverty!

On 26 April 2021, the Global Forest Expert Panel Programme of IUFRO organized a side event during the 16th Session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF16)! Lead authors of the publication "Forests, Trees and the Eradication of Poverty: Potential and Limitations. A Global Assessment Report" presented available scientific evidence on the wide range of contributions that forests and trees make to curbing poverty.

The event also gave an exclusive early insight into an upcoming GFEP publication entitled "Forests, Trees and Poverty Alleviation in Africa: An Expanded Policy Brief". This policy brief aims to demonstrate how forests and tree-based systems are central in achieving a prosperous Africa through poverty alleviation. It will be launched and circulated widely in July 2021!

In her closing remarks, Mette Løyche Wilkie also underlined the timeliness of both the global assessment and the African policy brief and emphasized the importance of a focus specifically on Africa. After all, Africa is the continent where the rate of deforestation is going up, whereas globally it is going down. There is an urgent need to counteract this trend and find viable solutions for the benefit of people and forests.
