Climate Change and Sustainable Supply of Softwood

Summary report of a Think Tank meeting between IUFRO scientists and representatives of the forest business sector looking at the case of Central Europe and providing an outlook for the 21st century

On 25th November 2019, a Think Tank meeting took place in Vienna, Austria, with the aim to develop an improved understanding between science and industry. The meeting intended to provide an outlook on the future of softwood in the Central European Region under conditions of climate change. Based on four scientific keynotes and a thorough discussion, options for joint actions of science and industry and formulations of possible pathways and practical solutions were developed.

In pursuit of IUFRO’s strategic goal of providing analysis, insights and options for practical use by stakeholders, IUFRO started to intensify cooperation with the forest industry and established a Science-Meets-Stakeholders Dialogue at the IUFRO 125th Anniversary Congress in 2017. This Dialogue was successfully continued at the Curitiba World Congress in 2019.

As a next step, IUFRO now piloted this Think Tank discussion with interested forest industry representatives on the future of softwood supply in Central Europe in light of climate change. The feedback received from the industry was extremely positive. The Think Tank meeting is considered another important element in strengthening the dialogue and, consequently, the impact of highly valuable scientific findings from the IUFRO community to meet societal needs.
