SILVA/IUFRO Division 3 PhD Conference
Umeå, Sweden; 16-20 June 2024
SLU's research school, SILVA, in co-operation with IUFRO Division 3 invite you to an international PhD conference in beautiful Umeå, where SLU's Faculty of Forest Sciences has its main campus. The location and timing is carefully chosen, so you will have the possibility to both enjoy the magical bright nights of Northern Sweden, as well as the possibility to add this activity to your participation at the 26th IUFRO World Congress in Stockholm.
The conference will provide an arena for networking and discussing challenges in forestry practices.
The theme is 'Sustainable forest management adaptation to climate change'. One part of the conference will be dedicated to hands-on and field-based experiences of and discussions on the (highly digitalized) Nordic forestry practices. The other part of the conference will be dedicated to presentations of your work, in order to promote academic discussions as well as to improve presentation and feedback skills.

3rd International Hybrid Symposium of Forest Engineering and Technologies (FETEC 2022)
"Forest Transportation Solutions and IT Applications for Natural Disaster Management"
online and Baku, Azerbaijan; 28-29 November 2022. Units involved: 3.00.00, 3.01.00
As one of the most important natural resources, forests have vital functions such as improving biodiversity, preserving soil, protecting water, and providing services to society. In order to maintain these functions, forest should be planned and managed by considering social, economic, ecological, and sociocultural factors. In recent years, natural disasters caused by abiotic factors result in serious biological and ecological damages on forest ecosystems while threatening the human life. The most effective natural disasters may include forest fires, winter storms, floods, landslides, and avalanches.
In order to minimize the detrimental effects of natural disasters, advanced information technologies (ITs) such as GIS, RS, ICT, IoT, etc. should be used in planning and implementing of natural disaster management activities. Besides, forest roads, providing important benefits of accessing forest areas, should be designed and constructed considering the natural disasters.
2nd IUFRO Division 3 Doctoral Student Conference
Corvallis, Oregon, USA; 29 September - 3 October 2022
Students, mark you calendars!
IUFRO Division 3 and Oregon State University will again host a Doctoral Student Conference in Corvallis, Oregon, USA. Encouraged by the grand success of the first IUFRO Division 3 Doctoral Student Conference in 2016, the host team again aims to foster networking and a strong global community of future research scientists in the fields of Forest Operations and Engineering.
The Conference will be student-oriented and provide a platform for attendees to present their research. Conference attendees will have many opportunities to network, share insights, advance their knowledge, and make new friends. Designed for youthful and energetic future research scientists, the conference will offer many socializing events. Guided field trips will also be offered to visit coastal and central Oregon, and OSU’s Research Forest.
Special issue of International Journal of Forest Engineering - Call for Papers
The International Journal of Forest Engineering (http://www.tandfonline.com/toc/tife20/current#.U2is9GeW2UQ) is currently soliciting papers for a Special Issue entitled “The role of Forest Operations in climate change affected forests". Dr. Janine Schweier, of the University of Freiburg (Germany), is serving as Guest Editor for this issue.
Growing attention is being given to forest, agriculture and wood based bio-products in both policy and science, because these products are renewable, biodegradable, capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, have a wide range of utilisation and thus, support the main goal to reach a sustainable and a climate neutral economy and society. However, the environment is already affected by significant changes in climate patterns worldwide which leads to the use of more challenging, more complex and thus more expensive biomass and bioenergy supply chains; for example when machines cannot access forest stands due to wet summers or winters and the operations must be carried out motor manually and with cable-yarding systems.
The core question addressed in this Special Issue is how climate change impacts will affect timber harvesting and extraction operations in the future.
