4.03.00 - Uncertainty analysis, computational ecology, and decision support

The North American biometricians are geographically separated into three regions: southern (SOMENS), northeastern (NEMO), and western (Western Mens). Each region holds individual meetings each year, sometimes in conjunction with other organizations. In the late 1980s, the first continental event was held in Saint Louis, MO. After more than three decades, the three regions decided that a new continental event should be held.

The 2022 North American event will present traditional biometrics and forest measurements techniques as well as novel modeling methods, such as machine learning, or forest inventory based on phodar or UAV (to list just a few). The event captured the interest of two research groups from the IUFRO Division 4 (Forest Assessment, Modelling, and Management), namely the 4.01 (Forest mensuration and modeling) and the 4.03 (Uncertainty analysis, computational ecology, and decision support), which co-sponsor the conference.

Aims and scope

Decision support systems for forest management have been steadily evolving since about 1980 in response to growing demand from forest managers for sophisticated analytical systems that can address the complexities of contemporary forest management issues such as adaptive management in the context of concerns for managing for forest ecosystem sustainability, integrity, and resilience while ensuring the provision of ecosystem services. In this same time frame, there has also been a steady shift in emphasis from stand-level to landscape-level decision support systems, in part driven by improved ecological understanding of, and appreciation for, the need to account for patterns and processes in forest management and planning.

Accordingly, the Editors of Forests have commissioned a 2021 special issue on spatial decision support systems and their application to state-of-the-art landscape solutions for forest management and policy formulation. In this initial call, manuscript proposals are invited on original research and review articles addressing:

  • Contemporary, state-of-the art systems and their application, emphasizing spatial decision support for either forest management or policy formulation.
  • Forward-looking (and perhaps more speculative) articles on how to advance spatial decision support technologies for forest management and policy formulation beyond the current state of the art.

Spatial decision support technologies have evolved on numerous pathways, including

  • knowledge-based,
  • probabilitistic,
  • and linear programming systems,
  • as well as combinations of these and other technologies,

so articles addressing any of these areas are welcome.

Articles addressing complex spatial decision support topics, such as support for

  • adaptive forest management,
  • forest ecosystem sustainability,
  • forest ecosystem integrity,
  • forest ecosystem resilience,
  • managing for pattern and process, and
  • provision of ecosystem services

are especially encouraged.


This announcement is an initial call for proposed manuscripts to be included in the Special Issue. Please submit proposals to Dr. Reynolds ( , including

  • Initial (tentative) list of authors, including names, affiliations, and email addresses
  • A brief abstract if 100 to 200 words

Special issue on Forestry and Sustainable Development

Carpathian forests provide important economic, environmental, and social services. Covering a large swath of land, it is natural that the issues and challenges faced by European forestry are also present in Romania. The aim of the symposium is to foster the exchange of ideas among scientists from different disciplines who are actively involved in solving some of the challenges encountered by the current forestry. A special focus will be placed in modeling, with emphasis on the relationships between remote sensing, image analysis, and estimation. The symposium has the following five main themes: forest ecosystem management, forest engineering, wildlife management, remote sensing and geomatics, and forest modeling. The Special Issue, which is designed to provide insight into a breadth of forestry topics, will contain papers that will answer some of the most stringent issues faced by current forestry.

Special Issue on Decision Support to Address Multiple Ecosystem Services in Forest Management Planning

We welcome the submission of manuscripts for publication in this Forests special issue (SI). This SI aims at contributing to our understanding of how we can enhance forest management planning, in integrating a wide range of ecosystem services (ES) and assuring a sustainable supply (e.g. products and services listed in the Millenium Ecosystem Assessment). We welcome manuscripts that focus on 1) models to help forest managers check the impact of management options on the provision of ES, 2) methods to help forest managers develop plans targeting the supply of ES, 3) methods to help forest managers analyze tradeoffs between a multitude of ES, 4) methods to help forest managers assess the sensitivity of the supply of ecosystem services to uncertain parameters, 5) multiple criteria decision support systems and 6) approaches to map the demand for ES and the quality and quantity of ES supply.  Papers submitted for publication in this Special Issue will undergo a rigorous peer review process with the aim of prompt and wide dissemination of research results and applications.
