Special Issue: "Decision Support Systems (DSS) for the Analysis of Pathways that Optimize Ecosystem Services Provision"
Submissions are invited for a Special Issue of Land.
Mixed conifer forests are found throughout the temperate zones on a variety of landscapes in both the northern and southern hemispheres. Like most mixed species forests, mixed conifer forests exist because different species coexist in a temporal or spatial pattern. Particularly in mountainous regions, mixed conifer forests are highly heterogeneous and can vary over a short distance. Mixed species assemblages can be either seral or stable, developing under patterns of one or more disturbances or developing under a fairly specific edaphic and climatic regime. Depending on the severity of expected anthropogenic climate change effects, these assemblages may face novel conditions that upset the competitive balances that historically existed. This Special Issue will present research and operational monitoring results at scales ranging from the level of individual tree group or stand up to landscape processes. We welcome studies on (1) basic physiology and stand dynamics and (2) operational treatments and impacts that provide evidence of influences on forest resiliency and productivity. This Special Issue is sponsored by the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) Unit 4.04.04 - Sustainable Forest Management Scheduling.

Special Issue "Non-Wood Forest Products Management: Inventory, Planning, Governance, Marketing and Trade"
The International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO Units 4.04.04—Sustainable Forest Management Scheduling and 5.11-Non-Wood Forest Products, IUFRO Task Force on Unlocking the Bioeconomy and Non-Timber Forest Products) as well as the 19th Symposium on Systems Analysis in Forest Resources (SSAFR 2021) are sponsoring this Special Issue of Forests (http://www.mdpi.com/journal/forests).
We welcome the submission of manuscripts for publication in this Forests special issue (SI). There are a myriad of opportunities to unlock the full potential of NWFPs, such as creating new knowledge and tools to optimize the sustainable provision and profitability of NWFPs, fostering the development of market conditions for NWFPs, and developing economic and governance strategies for the better management of wild forest products—particularly in low-income countries. Thus, this SI aims at contributing to the dissemination of research endeavors involving the development of models, methods, processes, and decision support tools to address the inventory, planning, harvesting, governance, certification, marketing, and trade of NWFPs. This will be influential to strengthen the NWFP knowledge base and of research strategies to support the full encapsulation of NWFPs in the framework of the sustainable management of forest ecosystems. Papers submitted for publication in this Special Issue will undergo a rigorous peer review process with the aim of prompt and wide dissemination of research results and applications.

The severity of forest fires has increased substantially worldwide. This severity is prone to increase as a consequence of global change, e.g. climate and socioeconomic change. This suggests the need for the development of a coherent wildfire risk management strategy. This poses a challenge to forest researchers and managers as this strategy calls for methods and tools to help integrate forest and fire management planning activities that are often carried out independently of each other.
This Research Topic aims to bring together multidisciplinary expertise on wildfire management and forest ecosystem management to report state-of-the-art research that may help address this challenge. In this context, the Research Topic will focus on decision methods and tools that may support a) the characterization of wildfire regimes, b) the understanding of extreme wildfire events, c) the assessment of impacts of wildfire risk on the provision of ecosystem services, d) the enhancement of wildfire prevention, wildfire suppression, and post-fire restoration processes and e) the effectiveness of wildfire risk management strategies.
