IUFRO News Vol. 40, Issue 4, April 2011

Read two press releases – one on forests and health and one on community-based forest management - that the CPF has published lately as a joint initiative in the International Year of Forests.

Research shows that there is a huge untapped economic and health potential in forest biodiversity. Many top-selling herbal products are derived from forests, and the collection and trade of raw materials continues to significantly affect forest economies. A CPF press release prepared by IUFRO and CPF partners and published prior to World Health Day underlines this forest benefit as well as the importance of sustainable forest management to preserve it. A second CPF press release published on the occasion of Earth Day on 22 April points at the need to increase communities’ role in forest management, which could contribute to lifting close to a billion people out of poverty, as well as improve the health and vitality of forests.
