IUFRO News Vol. 40, Issue 5, May 2011

Read about the importance of deadwood for forest ecosystems, the parallel changes in environmental conditions and forest management strategies, the 4th Forest Engineering Conference, and much more...

This issue includes, among other things, a report from the first international symposium on the "Dynamics and Ecological Services of Deadwood in Forest Ecosystems" that was held in Rouyn-Noranda, Canada, from 15-19 May 2011. Deadwood is a critical component of forest ecosystems that provides habitat for a range of species. The reduced volume of deadwood in managed forests negatively impacts the population dynamics of these species. You will also find reports from the meeting on "Managed Forests in Future Landscapes" held in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, a training course on wood-based panels that took place in Thailand, the 4th Forest Engineering Conference in South Africa and the WFSE Steering Committee meeting at IUFRO Headquarters.
