IUFRO News Vol. 49, Issue 5, May 2020

Read how IUFRO addresses social innovation in rural areas, why IUFRO-WFSE has started to work on forest restoration, what the IFSA President thinks about studying forestry, and more…

Forest dependent communities in rural and often marginalized areas are facing numerous challenges. The new IUFRO Unit 4.05.05 - Social innovation and entrepreneurship aims to bring together international experts and promote social learning, as well as to contribute ideas on social innovation and entrepreneurship that can be helpful for the development of marginalized rural areas.

The United Nations has declared 2021-2030 the 'Decade of Ecosystem Restoration' and multiple international, national and sub-national initiatives now promote the restoration of degraded forest lands. IUFRO's Special Project on World Forests, Society and Environment (WFSE) has started work on forest restoration and will provide an overview of the history of forest restoration, current commitments, assessments of restoration potentials and current achievements, among other things.

In an interview IFSA President Amanubo Amos talks about reasons for studying forestry, challenges of international networking in times of a pandemic, and his hopes for a future where humans and nature are reconciled, acknowledging that their existence is not mutually exclusive.

Also read how researchers from IUFRO Member Organization Embrapa Florestas (PR) use microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) derived from pine and eucalyptus as an effective thickening agent and emulsifier in the production of antiseptic alcohol and alcohol hand sanitizer, products used on the front lines against coronavirus infections which are in great demand among consumers.

This issue also offers comprehensive Publications and Announcements sections as well as an outlook to meetings that can hopefully take place later this year and in 2021!
