One of the cornerstones of the 2019 World Wood Day celebrations in Stübing/Graz, Austira, was the scientific symposium held together with the 2nd IUFRO Forest Products Culture Research Group Colloquium. In the course of the more than 60 presentations the simple statement of "wood is good" was put to the test by addressing questions such as "How do we know if our wood comes from good sources?", "Which wood is good for which purpose and how can we make it better?", and "Is our education system good enough to ensure forest sustainability and sustainable wood utilization?"
The 18th International Symposium on Legal Aspects of European Forest Sustainable Development and Wildlife: Skills and Vocational Training was held in Chisinau, Republic of Moldova, on September 11-15, 2018. For the first time, the symposium was organized by Research Group 9.06.00 Forest Law and Environmental Legislation in co-operation with Working Party 8.02.05 Wildlife conservation and management and Research Group 5.12.00 Sustainable utilization of forest products. The Joint IUFRO-IFSA Task Force on Forest Education took an active part in the preparation of two workshops.
The Global Competition on Best Practices in Forest Educationcompetition brought together teams from 23 countries and a total of 71 proposals containing photos, videos and short descriptions. The categories eligible for the competition included primary, secondary and tertiary education. Predefined criteria including pedagogical quality, novelty of the practice and practical effectiveness were used to determine finalists. The two winners of the global competition were announced on March 21st, the United Nations International Day of Forests.
