  • World Bamboo Day - 18 September
    World Bamboo Day is a day of celebration to increase the awareness of bamboo globally.  Where bamboo grows naturally, bamboo has been a daily element, but its utilization has not always been sustainable due to exploitation. The World Bamboo Organization aims to bring the potential of bamboo to a more elevated exposure – to protect natural resources and the environment, to ensure sustainable utilization, to promote new cultivation of bamboo for new industries in regions around the world, as well as promote traditional uses locally for community economic development.

    • Advanced Training Workshop on Bamboo Furniture and Weaving

      Date: November 6 - December 19, 2006
      Venue: FeMSEDA, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
      Organizers: Chinese Ministry of Commerce, International Network for Bamboo and Rattan, Ethiopian Government, etc.
      Course Content: Bamboo furniture and handicraft making. The workshop will include lectures, practice sessions, field visits and information exchange.

    • East Africa Workshop on Bamboo Cultivation and Utilization

      Course Content: Bamboo cultivation and bamboo forest management, utilization; Bamboo resource; Bamboo resource in the world/ Africa/China; Bamboo morphology; Bamboo growth: Monopodial bamboo, Sympodial bamboo; Bamboo flowering and bearing; Bamboo silviculture/cultivation; Plantation management and harvest; Bamboo gardening; Bamboo for eco-tourism; Bamboo environmental functions; Bamboo handicraft; Bamboo charcoal; Bamboo industrial development; Bamboo for livelihood and poverty mitigation. The workshop will include lectures, VCD/DVD show, practice sessions, field visits and information exchange.
      Participants: Selected Ethiopian participants by the government are free. Others should cover the costs.

    • Bamboo Furniture and Crafts Skills Training Workshop, UNIDO-INBAR

      Summary: Bamboo Furniture and Crafts Skills Training jointly organized by United Nation Industry Development Organization (UNIDO) and International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR) was held in Ambon, Maluku province of Indonesia. Master Chen Yunhua and Master Li Jianyin from INBAR Qingshen Bamboo Training Base were invited as the trainers to train local craftspeople with bamboo and rattan furniture making and bamboo weaving techniques. The training was organized by Mr. Juergen Hierold, the Project Manager, Mr. Abdul Syukur Sialana from UNIDO project, and Dr. Fu Jinhe of INBAR.

      On 8 March, Mr. Masayoshi Matsushita, the UNIDO Indonesia Office Representative, and Mr. Juergen Hierold from UNIDO headquarters attended the opening ceremony of the training. There were totally 25 trainees participate the training, 12 for bamboo and rattan furniture making and 13 for bamboo weaving. The trainees successfully completed the training under the instruction of two masters. The success of the training will greatly promote the development of bamboo and rattan processing industry in Indonesia.

      During the training, under the arrangement of Abdul Syukur Sialana, the National Project Coordinator of UNIDO in Indonesia, AMBONET TV Station have shot the major parts of the training, and made them into a documentary.

      The successful conducting of the training has attracted the high attention of the local government and Chinese embassy in Indonesia. On 3 April, 2006 the vice-governor of Maluku Province met two masters in his office and gave high appraise on the training. He also indicated specifically about how to develop the sector in the future. On 29 March, Ms. Xu Liping the first secretary of Chinese embassy paid a visit to the training workshop and would like to fund a similar training workshop in Java later.
