FUJISAKA, S.; HURTADO, L.; URIBE,R. A working classification of slash-and-burn agricultural systems . In: Agroforestry Systems (1996) 34(2) p.151-169. Cali, Colombia: Centro International de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT), 1996.
Slash-and-burn agricultural systems have received a great deal of attention given their observed or hypothesized role in tropical deforestation, biodiversity loss, and contribution to global warming. These agricultural systems are varied; and such diversity has led to confusion in making cross-site comparisons. Some 103 publications describing 136 cases were reviewed in order to develop a scheme to classify these systems. After a consideration of many possible variables, 4 (initial vegetative cover, type of user, final cover, and fallow length) were selected to describe each case in a simple and easy-to-apply manner, which would result in a relatively small number of groupings. Nine groups representing the same or similar combinations of values were identified, and 14 cases provided incomplete information and could not be grouped. The groups were: (1) primary forest, indigenous users, secondary regrowth; (2) primary forest, settlers, natural regrowth; (3) primary and secondary forest, indigenous users, natural regeneration; (4) secondary forest, indigenous communities, natural regeneration; (5) secondary forest, colonists, natural regeneration; (6) primary and secondary forest, mostly indigenous communities, conversion to agroforest; (7) secondary forest (government sponsored) colonists, conversion to plantation crops or taungya; (8) secondary forest, (mostly) settlers and ranchers, conversion to pasture; and (9) grasslands, indigenous and settlers, natural regeneration and pastures. Groupes were keyed for placement of each case on a global map indicating geographical distribution. The method provides a way to establish similarities or differences among slash-and-burn cases (or representativenesss of cases) to the degree that the available literature represents what exists in the field. Researchers are invited to provide descriptors of additional cases, respective references , and case locations in order to improve and test the utility of the method and to simultaneously expand the resulting database.
