IUFRO-SPDC changed its name

Same acronym, different name: In 2014 The Special Programme for Developing Countries became the "Special Programme for Development of Capacities".

"Global economic development over the past decades has brought significant changes. The world of today can no longer be rigidly divided into rich and poor countries. With the EU expanding into Eastern Europe, many countries in that region do not qualify for SPDC support anymore. Likewise, many previously developing countries have become emerging economies. Still, their forest research often remains under-resourced .

As a consequence the term "developing countries" has ceased to sufficiently describe our target audience and the name of SPDC has thus been changed from "Special Programme for Developing Countries" to "Special Programme for Development of Capacities", leaving its well-known acronym - SPDC - the same.
The new name has been launched at IUFROLAT 2013 and should be fully established throughout the IUFRO network at the IUFRO World Congress 2014."

IUFRO-SPDC celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2013

"In 1981 at the IUFRO World Congress (Kyoto, Japan) it was decided to establish the Special Programme for Developing Countries (IUFRO-SPDC). Operational since 1983, IUFRO-SPDC over the past 30 years provided support to the forest science community in economically disadvantaged countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe."
For further info on IUFRO-SPDC's history have a look at the special insert of IUFRO News that was published in 1999 on the occasion of IUFRO-SPDC's 15th anniversary.

Inserts in IUFRO News

In 2005 IUFRO launches a new electronic newsletter. IUFRO News, the quarterly printed newsletter of our Union, are merged with IUFRO E-Notes, the bi-monthly electronic information for officeholders and members. The new IUFRO bulletin is published ten times a year and brings up-to-date information in a structured format to all recipients of the former two media.

Reporting on IUFRO-SPDC events and activities
will remain an integral part of the new electronic newsletter. For those institutions in developing countries with limited facilities, IUFRO-SPDC will arrange for the production and distribution of printouts.

IUFRO-SPDC Annual Reports

Since 2001 IUFRO’s Annual Reports are different from IUFROs previous annual reports. They are now meant mainly for external purposes whilst so far the reports have been more for IUFRO’s internal use trying to cover in detail all activities of the past year. While now Annual Reports include some statistics and basic information on IUFRO, they highlight only a few of the organization’s many activities of the respective years.

Detailed reports on IUFRO-SPDC projects and activities are now posted on our web pages.
