IUFRO Spotlight #27 – Genes the means to screen future forest scene
New thematic study coordinated by Bioversity International for FAO highlights the breadth and depth of genetic aspects that need to be considered in ecosystem restoration using native tree species.
As a recent thematic study coordinated by Bioversity International, an IUFRO Member Organization, for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations – Genetic Considerations in Ecosystem Restoration Using Native Tree Species – notes, there is more to forest restoration than simply planting trees.
The study brings together the existing knowledge on genetic issues in ecosystem restoration, identifying knowledge gaps and areas needing further research and development efforts. And it offers recommendations for researchers, policy makers and restoration practitioners to better address deficiencies that could compromise the success of some restoration efforts.
