Extreme Wildfire Events, Event 1 - Forestry Speed Dating
On 23 October 2024 at 15:00 CEST, the Bioregions Facility and FIRE-RES are organising the first webinar of the Extreme Wildfire Events Series. The webinar brings together three innovators working on developing solutions that efficiently and effectively address wildfire risk and integrated fire management in Europe and beyond.
HoZe Solutions, Mosaico, and Trigan are innovative platforms focused on risk mitigation, community engagement, and disaster management. HoZe Solutions offers critical infrastructure owners and managers a proprietary dashboard to assess wildfire risks, visualize defensible spaces, and simulate potential wildfires based on experimental data, providing cost-effective fire suppression strategies. Mosaico focuses on proactive wildfire prevention through agro-silvopastoral practices, integrating agriculture, livestock, and forestry to restore landscapes and enhance resilience in communities like Las Hurdes, Spain. Trigan leverages AI and digital tools to empower urban communities to address shared challenges through democratic decision-making, resource allocation, and continuous feedback for disaster management. Together, these projects aim to enhance resilience and reduce wildfire risks.

8th Mediterranean Forest Week
Save the date for the next edition of the Mediterranean Forest Week (MFW), focusing on the restoration of forest ecosystems in the Mediterranean region. The MFW serves as a platform for cooperation among researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders, fostering dialogue on the challenges faced by Mediterranean forests.
Despite the continuous increase in forest cover over the past decades, mainly due to land use changes, the region faces challenges, including 80 million hectares of degraded land and 400,000 hectares burnt every year by wildfires. Climate change threatens 16% of animal and plant species in Mediterranean forests, while the severity and length of droughts shrinks the distribution ranges of the most important tree species in the Mediterranean. The 8th MFW will delve into solutions and initiatives for the restoration and sustainable management of these ecosystems.
MFW is one of the highlights of the Mediterranean forest calendar, offering the opportunity for networking, brainstorming and solution sharing on the most crucial issues for Mediterranean forests. MFW brings the Mediterranean forest community together for a deep dive into what is happening today and for the future in Mediterranean forests.
