Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES)

IPBES is an independent intergovernmental body established by States to strengthen the science-policy interface for biodiversity and ecosystem services for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, long-term human well-being and sustainable development. IUFRO holds an accredited observer status in IPBES.  IUFRO representatives are participating in the sessions of the platform and scientists from IUFRO’s network are involved as authors in IPBES assessments.


Joint activities:

  • IUFRO provided comments on the second order draft of the chapters and the first order draft of the summary for policymakers of the sustainable use of wild species assessment in the respective review process in 2021, https://www.ipbes.net/sustainable-use-wild-species-assessment.
  • IUFRO’s GFEP Coordinator Christoph Wildburger participated in the seventh session of the IPBES Plenary (IPBES-7) held from 29 April – 04 May, 2019, in Paris, France.
  • Current IUFRO President John Parrotta served as a Coordinating Lead Author in the IPBES Assessment Report on Land Degradation and Restoration in 2018, https://www.ipbes.net/assessment-reports/ldr.
