IUFRO holds an accredited observer status in the CBD and participates in the sessions of its Conferences of the Parties (COP) and in forest-relevant sessions of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) of the CBD. Scientists from IUFRO's network have participated in the Ad Hoc Technical Expert Groups (AHTEG) established by SBSTTA. IUFRO and CBD work closely together also through the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF).

CBD COPs have also offered possibilities to share the results of the previous Global Forest Expert Panels (GFEP) assessments. In 2012, results from the GFEP global assessment on REDD+ were presented at the CBD COP-11 in Hyderabad, India. The work of the Expert Panel contributed to the discussions on REDD+ and biodiversity, and was acknowledged in CBD decision XI/19. Emerging findings of the GFEP assessment report on forests, food security and nutrition were also presented at the CBD COP-12 in Pyeongchang, Republic of Korea (2014). At the CBD COP-13 in Cancun, Mexico (2016), the GFEP initiative launched its scientific assessment report "Illegal Logging and Related Timber Trade – Dimensions, Drivers, Impacts and Responses" during a press briefing at the High-Level Segment of the CBD COP-13, joined by high-level UN officials. IUFRO also made several interventions during the conference, including the High-Level Segment Round Table on Forestry and Working Group II of COP, and disseminated the GFEP "policy brief" to all attending delegations in the COP-13 (187 countries). Additionally, IUFRO organized a session on "country experiences" as part of the "Forest Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration Day" in the Rio Conventions Pavilion.


Joint activities:

The Conference of Parties (COP 15) of the CBD scheduled for 2020 was postponed and no major joint activities were undertaken in 2021. IUFRO's GFEP Programme plans to present the results of its recent study on REDD+ outcomes and its impacts on forests, biodiversity and people in the physical segment of COP15, tentatively scheduled to be held in late April 2022.
