IUFRO was granted an observer organization status in the CITES and participated in its Conference of the Parties (COP) first time in year 2016. IUFRO attended the CITES COP-17 (Johannesburg, South Africa), where the IUFRO-GFEP initiative presented the emerging findings of the GFEP Rapid Response on Illegal Logging and Related Timber Trade at the 27th INTERPOL Wildlife Crime Working Group, taking place in the frame of CITES COP-17.

As of 2018, CITES became also a member of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF).

Joint activities:

In early 2021, CITES requested to participate in the Global Forest Expert Panels Initiative, which is an IUFRO-led initiative of the CPF. IUFRO HQ invited the CITES Secretariat to join the Steering Committee of GFEP - this invitation was gladly accepted.

In the CITES COP-18, held in 2019, a decision was made and directed to the CITES Secretariat, asking them to liaise with organizations who have relevant expertise on timber identification, to find out about shared priorities. In April 2020, CITES requested input by CPF members to a questionnaire on the identification of timber and other wood products. IUFRO HQ shared the questionnaire with the Coordinator and officeholders in Division 5.

CITES Secretary-General Ms. Ivonne Higuero delivered a keynote presentation on International trade in CITES-listed Tree Species at the XXV IUFRO World Congress in September 2019 in Curitiba, Brazil. Ms. Higuero highlighted the role of science in support the work of the Convention and opportunities for collaboration with IUFRO.
