International Boreal Forest Research Association (IBFRA)
IBFRA and IUFRO have established a close collaboration to strengthen global knowledge and research collaboration on issues affecting boreal forests. This partnership builds on the intricate link between boreal and global forest research, the similar cultures of IBFRA and IUFRO as networking organizations of independent scientists, and a common interest in promoting forest research collaboration and in contributing to forest-related decision-making.
IUFRO traditionally serves as a sponsoring organization for the biennial IBFRA Conference, and relevant IUFRO units contribute to its scientific programme. Likewise, forest researchers from the boreal region actively participate in the work of IUFRO as officeholders. Several scientific units of IUFRO are directly related to boreal forests, including Working Parties such as 1.01.01 "Boreal forest silviculture and management" and 8.01.06 "Boreal and Alpine forest ecosystems". The focus of Unit 8.01.06 overlaps to a large extent with the activities within IBFRA; therefore, it has been decided to coordinate future activities as much as possible. Numerous other units address research fields of relevance to the boreal region with active participation of several IBFRA scientists.
