IUFRO European Congress on Forests and Forestry in the Context of Rural Development

About 225 researchers, policy makers, and other stakeholders attended the IUFRO European Congress, which also served as the science portion of the EFI (European Forest Institute) annual meeting, sponsored by both these organizations and the Forestry Faculty of the Warsaw Agricultural University, from September 6-8, 2007.

The sessions highlighted, among other things, the importance of understanding how local areas are linked to global issues such as climate change, deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and bio-energy. In a final panel discussion on the future forest research agenda emphasis was placed on the need to include the social perspective of interactions between forest managment and rural development.
