The IUFRO "Ecological History" conference underlines the relevance of historical experience to future woodland management. IUFRO has also prepared guidelines for the MCPFE process for including social and cultural values in SFM.

The relevance of cultural values and historical experience in forest management

The IUFRO conference on "Woodland Cultures in Time and Space" from 3-7 September 2007 in Thessaloniki, Greece, was organized by IUFRO Working Party 6.07.04 "Ecological History" and attracted some 150 delegates from 24 countries. At the conference, Professor Mauro Agnoletti, coordinator of IUFRO Research Group 6.07.00 presented the "Guidelines for the Implementation of Social and Cultural Values in Sustainable Forest Management (SFM)" to be published as IUFRO Occasional Paper 19 and presented at the 5th Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe (MCPFE) in Warsaw, Poland, in early November 2007.
