Beijing,China,  7-8 November 2022

In order to promote the green economic development using bamboo and rattan and contribute to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the Second Global Bamboo and Rattan Congress (BARC 2022) will be held at the Beijing International Convention Centre on 7-8 November 2022. Co-hosted by the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization (INBAR) and the National Forestry and Grassland Administration of China (NFGA), BARC 2022 will bring together representatives from governments, research institutes, international and non-governmental organizations, the private sector and the media, to discuss the development of bamboo and rattan. In view of the requirements of the COVID-19 pandemic, BARC 2022 will be held in a hybrid format, with sessions both online and in-person, with in-person participation open only to guests currently residing in mainland China. BARC 2022 will continue the important legacy of the first Global Bamboo and Rattan Congress that was held in 2018.

China-Canada Joint Laboratory for Bamboo & Rattan Science & Technology was established in June 2020 by the International Centre for Bamboo and Rattan, China (ICBR) and the Faculty of Forestry, University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada. Drawing on the respective strengths of ICBR and UBC Faculty of Forestry, this collaborative initiative works on the interdisciplinary, cross-regional research in the materials science of bamboo, rattan and wood, with an aim to advance the research and development of bamboo and rattan and promote the role of bamboo and rattan in global sustainable development and climate change mitigation and adaptation.

The Joint Laboratory will host its 2nd online seminar at 9:00 am (Beijing time GMT+8), December 15, 2021, where four researchers and postgraduate students from ICBR and UBC will share their latest findings on bamboo and rattan-based materials science. This seminar is open to public and all those interested or working in this field are welcome.

One of the goals of the inaugural Global Bamboo and Rattan Congress 2018 is to present the finest scientific research in the fields of bamboo and rattan. To support bamboo and rattan research development, researchers that submit their abstract will be considered for BARC2018 sponsorship for the registration fee and local accommodation (but not transportation).
