Supporting early career researchers, improving forestry research capacity

APFNet Session at Asia-Oceania Congress with representatives from international organizations and governmental forestry research institutes.

At the IUFRO Regional Congress for Asia and Oceania, the Asia-Pacific Network for Sustainable Forest Management and Rehabilitation (APFNet) brought together representatives from international organizations and governmental forestry research institutes on a panel to discuss the support for early career forest researchers.

Michael Kleine, the Coordinator of IUFRO's Special Programme for Development of Capacities (IUFRO-SPDC) delivered a presentation sharing SPDC’s 30 years of experience in providing capacity building for early and mid-career scientists in economically disadvantaged countries.

APFNet is currently designing a new Early Career Academics Program (ECAP) targeted at young forestry scientists in the region. IUFRO-SPDC, CIFOR and other forestry professionals and academics were invited to discuss specific aspects and requirements for such a program, particularly emphasizing short courses, internships and mentorships programs as these are most effective to put young scientists on a fast track to gain the necessary working experience.

On 23 October 2016 IUFRO signed anMoU with APFNet: http://www.iufro.org/news/article/2016/10/23/memorandum-of-understanding-with-apfnet/
