IUFRO: INVITATION TO NOMINATE CANDIDATES FOR VOTING MEMBERS OF THE IUFRO BOARD 2024-2029

15 February 2022

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the International Council and the current Board of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO), it is our privilege to invite you to nominate potential candidates to serve as members of the IUFRO Voting Board for the period from June 2024 until the end of the IUFRO World Congress 2029.

The IUFRO Voting Board is the executive organ of the Union. Its elected members include the President, two Vice-Presidents, Division Co-Coordinators (2) of each of the nine Divisions and up to five President's Nominees. Membership of the Voting Board is considered a highly prestigious appointment that brings credit and international attention to the individual and to the Board member’s parent organization and country.

According to IUFRO's Statutes, any individual member of the Union (individuals belonging to a Member Organization and Associate Members) can nominate potential candidates. Please note that nomination does not guarantee election.

IUFRO’s Nominating Committee will review all nominations and provide a slate of candidates for each position. The Board will make final recommendations to the International Council at its 62nd Board Meeting in early 2023. Based on these recommendations, IUFRO’s International Council will be asked to vote on the composition of the IUFRO Voting Board 2024-2029 via electronic ballot vote in June-July 2023.

Please note that this call for nominations does not include the President’s Nominees. The election process for the President’s Nominees will be concluded at the IUFRO World Congress 2024 in Stockholm, Sweden, when the International Council will vote to approve the President’s Nominees as recommended by the Board.

Please be aware that the International Council, following a recommendation by the IUFRO Board, agreed in late 2021 to change the structure of the Voting Board. Thus, starting with the 2024-2029 Board term, each Division will have two Co-Coordinators. At least one of the two Division Co-Coordinators must be female and/or from a region of the world currently under-represented on the Voting Board.

As far as possible, the Voting Board membership should embody the diversity of scientific disciplines, nationalities, genders and ages of colleagues in the Union. Therefore, the selection process for Voting Board nominations 2024-2029 seeks to identify outstanding persons that reflect this diversity.

In making a nomination, you are asked to confirm that the nominee(s) is(are) willing to serve in the Voting Board position. Also that the nominee’s employer supports the candidate in fulfilling the tasks that the position requires (Annex 2). The Board meets typically once a year, and Board committees may hold additional meetings.

In making your nomination, you are requested to justify why the candidate would be particularly qualified for the office for which she/he is nominated. This should also provide an indication of the candidate’s record in working with IUFRO. Also please include the curriculum vitae of the candidate(s).

The Board will take into consideration the nominee's ability and commitment to actively work in the pursuit of IUFRO's aims, as well as the nominee's outstanding scientific and managerial records. The Board will pay particular attention to the ability of a nominee to stimulate activity within the IUFRO network, to actively communicate scientific results to a non-scientific audience, and to relate science and research findings to policy makers.

Nominations may be submitted for the following IUFRO positions:

  • President
  • Vice-President - responsible for supporting and overseeing the work of IUFRO Divisions
  • Vice-President - responsible for supporting and overseeing the work of IUFRO Task Forces, Special Programmes, Projects and IUFRO Initiatives

  • Division Co-Coordinators (2) - Division 1: Silviculture
  • Division Co-Coordinators (2) - Division 2: Physiology and Genetics
  • Division Co-Coordinators (2) - Division 3: Forest Operations Engineering and Management
  • Division Co-Coordinators (2) - Division 4: Forest Assessment, Modelling and Management
  • Division Co-Coordinators (2) - Division 5: Forest Products
  • Division Co-Coordinators (2) - Division 6: Social Aspects of Forests and Forestry
  • Division Co-Coordinators (2) - Division 7: Forest Health
  • Division Co-Coordinators (2) - Division 8: Forest Environment
  • Division Co-Coordinators (2) - Division 9: Forest Policy and Economics

The incumbent President and Vice-Presidents cannot be re-elected to their present positions while other members may be re-elected only once to the same position. You may, however, propose the current Vice-Presidents for a different position.

As has been done in the past, the IUFRO Deputy Division Coordinators will not be subject to the nomination process. In each Division, the Division Co-Coordinators, after their election, will propose up to four Deputy Division Coordinators, appointed by the Board. Of these Deputy Division Coordinators, two should preferably come from amongst the Coordinators of the Research Groups of the Division.

Please send your nomination letter together with Annexes 1 and 2, the curriculum vitae of the candidates and an indication of their record of participation or leadership in IUFRO activities to both of us by e-mail at the following addresses:
