United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) sets an overall framework for intergovernmental efforts to tackle the challenge posed by climate change. IUFRO holds an accredited observer status in the UNFCCC and participates in the sessions of its Conferences of the Parties (COP) and its Subsidiary Bodies, as appropriate. IUFRO and the UNFCCC Secretariat collaborate also in the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF).
UNFCCC COPs have also offered opportunities to share the results of IUFRO’s Global Forest Expert Panels (GFEP) assessments: GFEP launched its global assessment report and associated “policy brief” on REDD+ and biodiversity at Forest Day 6 during UNFCCC COP-18 in Doha, Qatar, in December 2012. Emerging findings of the GFEP assessment report on forests and food security were presented at the Global Landscapes Forum during UNFCCC COP-20 in Lima, Peru, in December 2014.
Joint activities:
- The GFEP Programme organized a virtual booth with the lead authors of its recent REDD+ study at the Climate Global Landscape Forum 2021 in Glasgow, taking place back-to-back with the COP 26 of the UNFCCC in early November, and showed a respective video to communicate emerging outcomes, especially to the participants of the UNFCCC session, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3S3CK7bul8.
- WFSE organized jointly with Rainforest Alliance and World Conservation Society a hybrid Side Event at COP26 in Glasgow discussing the role of strong alliances in achieving climate resilient landscapes, https://youtu.be/rJWkYUYyJRw.
- WFSE organized a panel discussion on forest landscape restoration at GLF Climate, Glasgow, 8 November 2021, https://youtu.be/3Bs_ySp-L7w.
